Seeking Home is a cultural memoir exploring identity, family, belonging and that age-old question, ‘Where do you come from?’
These are all topics that have always fascinated me. Growing up as an Asian diaspora kid in the UK, I always felt somewhat split between two cultures, both Western and Asian, and sometimes never enough on both fronts. My family history – my mother’s parents who emigrated to Singapore from Shanghai after the Second World War, my paternal grandmother’s coming of age and unhappy marriage in Telok Anson and Kuala Lumpur – has always seemed something elusive and faraway.

So when I moved to Singapore in 2019, with my ang-moh husband, I thought it was an opportunity to dive into my family’s story. In learning more about them and the places they grew up, I met new people, tasted new foods and discovered new things about myself.
I learnt that seeking home isn’t about packing boxes, or settling into new houses. It’s through seeking connection and stories. Both the new ones and the ones that have been in your family your whole life.
I’ve tried to capture them in this book, which can also be seen as the “story of an incessantly rootless family’s search for home” and “snapshots of Singapore life through a foreigner’s eyes”. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.
